Green Clean
Green Clean
Cleaners are expensive, not to mention toxic. All you have to do is take a stroll down the cleaner aisle in the grocery store to smell what I mean. But you don’t have to use a toxic, expensive store bought cleaner to have an effective cleaning session. Here are some items you can have on hand at home and throw together for a fraction of the cost.
1. Jug of clear, generic vinegar. Purchase the largest one you can buy and it will last a long time. You can use vinegar for your Window or All Purpose cleaner. Use a small spray bottle then add half water and half vinegar with a few drops of your favorite essential oil. The oil adds a great smell and can be an additional disinfectant.
2. Baking Soda- Works well as a scouring powder for scrubbing the sink or other surfaces.
3. Borax (in laundry detergent aisle) can be used as a safer alternative instead of bleach, or to disinfect.
4. Lemons- can cut grease
5. Olive Oil- Will work well on your wood.
6. Club Soda-helps take out stains.
Hip Mama’s Try to Be Green
Hip Mama’s Try to Be Green
It can be discouraging hearing some of the biggest green celebrities speaking about how we can be green saying, “buy a hybrid car, or install solar panels.” The rest of us, in the real world, many living paycheck to paycheck can’t afford such luxuries. So we go away thinking I can’t be green, but you can do simple things like: recycle, take cloth bags to the grocery store, unplug things and turn out lights when not in use (the added benefit being a lower electricity bill), walk your kids to school when weather permits instead of driving, turn your car off when sitting waiting, if we think about what we do everyday there are so many ways in life to be green and economical. It turns out we don’t have to have the money to run out and buy a hybrid car or install solar panels.
Thirsty? Green Water Bottles
Thirsty? Green Water Bottles
Face it we get thirsty when we’re out and at times buy that plastic bottled water, but are these companies being green? Here are a few who are thinking about the earth when they make money. Belu, a UK company is using corn derived plastic that decomposes in 12 weeks for its plastic bottles and it donates 20% of its proceeds to water charities. A Canadian company +1 also offers plastic bottles made from corn which decompose quickly. Hopeful we can say drink up when more companies start using corn to make their plastic bottles.
Green Wrapping on a Budget
Green Wrapping on a Budget
It’s almost that time of year again that makes many of us cringe in fear instead of rejoice: The expensive holiday season. It can be a time of great waste with wrapping paper and bags thrown in most peoples trash, but not ours right! It can also be a time to use some simple tips and make disguising gifts more green and economical. Instead of using holiday wrap or bags this year why not buy one of those cloth bags they have at nearly ever store, many for under a dollar. Some stores offer cute designs like Whole Foods, which also have green messages or Trader Joes bags that have fun designs. Visit the local craft store and have your kids decorate a bag for someone, or use left over t-shirts. According to the Martha Stewart Show you can make a bag from an old t-shirt. Cut a bigger whole in the neck and sew up the bottom of the shirt and you have an instant bag to put presents in.
Green Baby Diapers
Green Baby Diapers
Are you a diapering Mama who feels guilty every time you throw that plastic diaper in the trash? There are other alternatives such as: chlorine-free organic diapers (Seventh Generation, Nature Baby Care, Tushies, TenderCare and even sometimes cheaper store brands like: Whole foods Brand, Meijers Brand). These diapers are better for baby and don’t pollute the earth with chemicals like Dioxin. The problem with the eco-diapers is they can be expensive and still may take 500 years to decompose in landfills just like its chemically filled diaper counterparts.
Another option are cloth diapers with cute designs like: Fuzi Bunz, Bum Genius, just to name a few or an in between option called G- Diapers which has a variety of cute cloth covers with flushable or compostable (when baby goes #1 and not #2) diapers that are easy to use if you don’t have flushing issues with your toilet. You can use a cloth interior by purchasing those separately. Places like like: Greenmountaindiapers.com sell all of the cloth diapering accessories according to Raising Baby Green by: Alan Greene, MD. There are many options than just the conventional diapers for your baby to keep you and your baby covered.
